De tentoonstelling ‘The Unforgettable Fire' is een eerbetoon aan galeriehouder Adriaan van der Have, die begin april dit jaar is overleden. Sinds hij in 1984 TORCH Gallery oprichtte, is deze galerie beeldbepalend geweest voor de geënsceneerde fotografie in Nederland en buitenland. Met grote passie en bevlogenheid heeft Van der Have talentvolle en nu bekende kunstenaars een podium gegeven in zijn galerie. Hij presenteerde er in 25 jaar altijd smaakmakende en soms controversiële kunst.

De jubileumtentoonstelling biedt met werk van 26 kunstenaars - ieder jaar een kunstenaar - een veelzijdig overzicht van de bewogen geschiedenis van de galerie. Since 1984 TORCH Gallery has been of major importance to photography in both the Netherlands and abroad. With great enthusiasm and passion gallery owner Adriaan van der Have has provided a platform for talented and today well-known artists within his gallery. With a clear eye for young and self-willed talent he has managed to present trendsetting and sometimes controversial art. The jubilee exhibition offers work by 26 artists - one artist per year - and thus presents a varied survey of the stirring history of the gallery.

Kunsthal Rotterdam eert galeriehouder

ROTTERDAM (ANP) - Kunsthal Rotterdam eert galeriehouder Adriaan van der Have, de vorige week vrijdag overleden eigenaar van Torch Gallery, met een tentoonstelling. Dat heeft de Kunsthal Rotterdam maandag bekendgemaakt.
Van der Have begon zijn gallerie in 1984. Torch richtte zich vooral op de geënsceneerde fotografie en was in binnen- en buitenland een begrip. Hij bood internationaal bekende mensen als Anton Corbijn en Loretta Lux een podium. Emily Ansenk, directeur van de Kunsthal, noemt het overlijden van Van der Have een groot verlies voor de Nederlandse kunstwereld.
Kunsthal Rotterdam werkte tot kort voor zijn overlijden nauw samen met Van der Have aan een jubileumtentoonstelling over Torch. De expositie wordt op 29 mei geopend.

We gingen 25 jaar geleden ook weleens naar Praag waar Adriaan veel fotografen kende. Dat was nog een avontuur in die 'koude oorlog' tijd. Een van hen: Stanislav Tuma (1950-2005) maakte deze foto.

First time we walked in to TORCH was about 10 years ago; we were shocked with the pile of books in his office. At that time, we were shy to talk with him. So, we only started to talk together years later… He was so funny and had much interesting stories to tell. One time we were talking about one news article, and Adriaan said ‘ I must have the newspaper somewhere.’ and looking at the pile of books and newspapers.
We enjoyed talking with him very much. We wish we had more chance to talk together, but, now, we can follow this blog to listen to his stories!

Adriaan has been so supportive to us. We have learned a lot and we will keep his tips in our mind! And, Adriaan is still supporting us with this lucky charm, Millionaire’s Starter Kit! He gave it to me before I left for Seoul. It is always with me in my wallet. Thank you, Adriaan!

Nuts

Adriaan always got crazy for nuts and Spargel (asparagus - only in May and June) when he visited us in Germany. He imported three little nut-trees from our garden and planted them in the sandy ground of Zeeland where his family have a litte holiday-house. It seemed impossible that the little trees can stand the seaside climate it, but they did. Typicall Adriaan!

The Big Man. The TorchMeister.

What an odd thing to wait for this, knowing that it was on the way. Like this ogre in the sky. And how wonderful his grumpily dismissing of the Beast.

In Miami, this past December, he was struggling to get about with a poor excuse for a cane, dragging himself into the worst diner in town to eat the worst food in town with the motley crew that doubled as his entourage. But when we went that evening to the photo exhibition tucked beneath the scruffy highway, with all those glossy Naomis and Marilyns, etc., it was as if he'd suddenly been plugged in - running in a three-legged race, from pillar to post, knowing there was just that one photo that he so sorely wanted. The Madman. His Obsession knew no bounds.

Only a year ago, same city, Estelle was eyeing his little book of notes, addresses, etc., and seeing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, cannily picked it up and began perusing his chaotic scribbles. An Explosion of Chinese profanity, laced with Dutch invective, and wildly ineffective arm-waving produced only a slight smile from the dark-haired lady as she held the book out of his reach. He was beside himself.

All the more poignant to see her with him in February (Amsterdam), he fidgeting in an uncomfortable chair, she listening, as he outlined the future and ignored the Beast.

With that mop of blondish hair (and then when all the hair was gone), he could have been mistaken for an angel, when seen from a distance.

A great and dear man, a great force, and a delicate being.

The photo is a sweet memorie because it shows Adriaan in a way he totally was: naughty, happy, funny and a bit irritated at the same time.

Fun Story from Pearl (New York)

Back when the Armory Show was actually held in the downtown Armory, I was stuck installing the Stux booth by myself; everyone had left the building for the evening except for Adriaan. I had only met him once the year before, and only knew him as the big guy who gave me a free t-shirt of himself being spanked.
.
We decided to walk out together, and phones started to ring at the booths of the rich galleries who could afford to install landlines (oh, life before cell phones)... Adriaan picked up Pace Wildenstein's phone and said, "Club Satyricon, how may I help you?" Then he picked up another and said, "Everything is sold! Don't call back!" We ran out of there, laughing so hard -- and I knew he would be my friend forever.

Adriaan en Mitsy ken ik al bijna 25 jaar. Hij heeft ooit een tentoonstelling gemaakt, werk van me meengenomen naar de beurs in Keulen en ervoor gezorgd dat ik een kleine solo in het Groningermuseum kreeg. Het was altijd wel een wat ingewikkelde relatie, de lat lag er hoog. Kon dat niet altijd bijhouden die snelheid, maar hij was wel altijd een stimulans en voorbeeld over waar het in kunst om draait. De eerste foto is uit mijn fotodagboek, gemaakt op 30 oktober 2003.

De tweede foto komt uit mijn serie Artist In The World (http://www.artistintheworld.com/), is gemaakt op 17 januari 2009. Ik fotografeerde op dat moment alleen kunstenaars voor deze serie. Had een afspraak met Mitsy. Natuurlijk wilde ik ook graag van Adriaan een foto maken. Wist dat hij zo ziek was. Voor mijn was hij ook een Artist! Aan Mitsy gevraagd en hij wilde poseren.
Voelde wel wat twijfel toen ik hem ontmoette. Ziet hij het echt wel zitten? Het is een prachtige foto geworden. Breekbaar ook en droevig. Hij had een heel slechte week achter de rug. Achteraf hoorde ik dat hij speciaal voor mij met veel moeite de trap was afgekomen. Had ook het idee dat hij al precies wist hoe het moest gebeuren. Op die plek.
Vanaf dat moment besloot ik voor mijn serie ook de kunstwereld te fotograferen. De serie is opgedragen aan hem.

Als de 'big papa' van een zigeunerfamilie aan verscheidene kunstenaars, wist Adriaan jarenlang zijn eigen route te kiezen, zijn omgeving te verassen of te verbazen, ja zelfs te tarten. Zijn liefde voor de kunst en kunstenaars vormde zijn kompas, om hiermee tijdens zijn onverzadigbare reis op zoek te blijven naar die onbekende muze. De vlam is gedoofd, maar zijn schijnsel blijft flonkeren.

Denk veel aan Adriaan en de mooie gezamenlijke herinneringen die we hebben gedeeld!
Heb vaak samen met hem aan beurzen meegedaan bijvoorbeeld.
Normaal gesproken zijn dat stressvolle periodes. Maar met Adriaan werd het altijd een klein feestje.
In plaats van uit eten te gaan met collega's, gingen we 's avonds naar de kermis of het circus.
Lekker even geen kunst.

Denk met veel liefde, maar ook respect en bewondering terug aan 'Aadje'.
Aan zijn gepassioneerde pleidooien voor 'zijn' kunstenaars.
Aan zijn kennis van 'ons vak'. En zijn onverwachte, originele, maar steeds scherpe, visie daarop.
Aan de overtuigingskracht waarmee hij altijd maar doorging.
Ik heb hem nooit op een zwak moment kunnen betrappen.
God, wat zal ik hem missen!

The Future of Torch

The Sanchez Bros call him Mo-Master, and rightfully so.

Sweet Mo has been thrown into this Torch Circus and found his heart.

Many of us believe he will do well continuing the Torch flame.

Here's a picture that Adriaan took of Mo with Mary Boone (Miami, 2007).

Soon she will beg to sit on HIS chair!

I must admit it was quite a shock to know the news about Adriaan. Number 4 is a very unlucky number in the Chinese culture, that was for me shocking too.
I really thought he was in good shape and his health condition was stable. Sometimes this year I will meet Adriaan again once I’m back in Amsterdam – now it’s too late......
He sent me this very funny postcard picture begin Jan. 09 by post and I was so happy to receive it.
